Description Question: Have you in the past done research on other productions before you start to design or is that something you try to avoid as much as possible? Answer: ? I don't mind seeing a show that I'm about to design, I tend to think I'll learn more from what I don't like about it then I will in terms of what I want to copy from it. You have to be quite careful I think, I saw Terry Hands' Henry the Fifth and Henry Fourth and Sixth and that had quite a strong influence on me and it was quite difficult to get away from that when I did it a bit later with the ESC. Question: Was it a positive or negative influence having seen them? Answer: Creatively negative in the end that it, kind of, got in the way a bit, that I couldn't get away from that presentation. Question: That's certainly the case with actors having to do 'to be or not to be' is there a similar sort of thing that happens with design? That there becomes a sort of seminal production that you have to battle against or deal with. Answer: I think probably you are corrupted as soon as you see anyone else's show, probably for the rest of your creative life. You know, I think, as soon as you've seen how someone else does it then your response to it must narrow and that you can't achieve a really raw response. I mean I think when I worked with Buzz and we did Hamlet that my response then was completely raw because I was totally untutored at that time, in fact, I mean, at that time, I don't think I'd designed a period show at that time. And, I think, when I went into the main theatre and started designing, kind of, main house shows that my work became a parody in some ways.
