Answer: Well, in the middle of the fifties I didn't know anything about the theatre at all. And a whole new wave of new writing began to emerge. Which was more to do with our contemporary world than I'd ever seen before in the theatre as far as I knew. And it all happened at the Royal Court. And I became an avid follower of everything that was at the Royal Court and I became quite passionate about the theatre and started to wonder how I could start to work in the theatre. Because of that new... wave that was happening at that time. Where the writing was about contemporary issues which we just were so involved with at that time, but we'd never see them on stage before. I was working in the film industry at the time. I was a continuity girl and the production secretary. I loved film. I loved music. I didn't know anything about the theatre at all. But I had once been to art school, to St Martin's, and so I could draw and paint a bit. And I thought, all right that's what I could do in the theatre. And so I went back to school, luckily I was married by then and my husband supported me through art school and I did the stage design course and the first people I showed my portfolio to were, was at the Royal Court. I just went straight there, and that's the only place that I, you know, I wanted to be. I didn't actually get a lot of work there but it was, that was the focal area of my interests at that time. |
