Description Answer: I'm absolutely against thematic teaching. I think you need the A to Z of everything. Of the history of architecture, the history of costume, the history of the decorative arts, the history of music, the history of stage design, the history of literature, the history of drama, everything, must be put into its historic context and then you're free as a bird. And you leap out from that. But you have to saturate yourself in all those things. And it's not been taught that way now, I'm afraid. I mean I get students and I ask them if they've been, have they done history of art and they say 'yes' and it turns out that they've done the Renaissance, and that's all. They don't know what came before or what comes after and it's thematic teaching now, you know.
