Answer: We started off with the proscenium and... we wanted to get away from the picture frame and have a more direct contact with the audience and so a lot of the old orchestra pits were covered over so that the actors could break through the proscenium through the forth wall and stand a little closer to the audience, certainly for soliloquies in Shakespeare. It was incredible if Hamlet could come and just stand in the proscenium or just in front of it or sit on the front of the stage as sometimes they did. And this kind of intimacy breaking through the proscenium began a whole development of newer theatres that were built flexibly so that you could have, you know, end on proscenium or thrust or in the round. And there are many many examples of that which proliferated here there and everywhere. And the whole and the choices were how if you are doing this play which space seems right for it at this moment. And that was a huge influence on on design. |
