Question: Do you think that Shakespeare causes problems for the British theatre generally? Is it a positive force or is it a sort of legacy that people are always referring back to? Answer: I think it's a bit of both, don't you? I think that you know it could be a much more positive force if we could get younger people more involved, younger people. I don't know, I'm talking as a white middle-class person who is not involved in it any more, it's very easy for me to sit here and make these assessments. I'm not running a theatre company, you know, and unfortunately and I do put it down to our sponsorship of the arts in this country, you know, you have got to get bums on seats and even if the bums on seats you get are white middle-class people, you've just got to prove that you can get them you know and that's hard enough. So getting other people in who aren't even educated in this, you know, it's terrible, kids are not still educated enough in Shakespeare, it's more accessible to them but they're not educated enough in it, or in any of the arts really, never mind your Shakespeare and you know you're going to have a problem getting those people into theatre, never mind wanting to read a book you know, so I don't know, it's easy for me to sit here and say but I got out because I just couldn't stand that dilemma any longer and I wanted to spend some time with my own family. |
