Question: Do you work closely through the rehearsal period to adjust things? Answer: David would love his designers to be there as much as the actors, it's impossible. I mean in fact I used to feel that he would ask the impossible sometimes and you know he would not be understanding what pressures were behind trying to get something started because he would be happy to leave the whole set making process until the actors had rehearsed for two weeks. You know, that's really what David would have loved and I'm sure Fran will reiterate that. But it very rarely happened you know, that's maybe why as well the sets were often quite minimal if you like to use that term, you know, there wasn't a lot of time left to make huge structures but then it's the whole, the whole piece came together much more because of that, then I think it was a risk worth taking. But a lot of people never understood it, we used to get as a designer I used to have to fend off the anxiety of the chippies, the costume makers, everybody who was lined up to work on that production, they had their own deadlines you know as well, you had to be prepared to sort of stand in as a go-between, between you and the director and say "well, you know we have to trust this process, David is coming up with where he wants to go" and then when he knew where he wanted to go with the production then you could make a start, but it always I think started, for me it always started with David feeling comfortable about what he knew the play was about and then talking to me about that and then I might come up with a suggestion, like with Two Gentleman of Verona I remember him saying he wanted to set it to music and he wasn't sure what period and I thought that was a very strong idea and suggested the thirties, you know, because it was very romantic, and it was an immensely successful production because of that really because I think we both felt very much behind it. But that was left until the enth hour, you know, everybody was pulling their hair out. It was good. |
