Question: Are there other designers who have influenced your work, or people that you admire in particular? Answer: Yeah, there are and they change as well. I remember looking at a picture of Brant, that was on the, I think it was the Methuen copy of Brant, Ibsen's Brant, and it was designed by Ralph Koltai. I thought that was a brilliant image, so I'd have to cite him as being the sort of number one attraction really. And I think he's done some brilliant work. And I think Stefan Lavaridis's work in the eighties was very interesting in opera, there were some very, very unusual and interesting productions that he did at the English National Opera. I like Richard Hudson's work, I think he's very innovative and I like John Napier before he did musicals, if I'm allowed to say that? When he worked at the Shakespeare, you know, the Royal Shakespeare Company with Trevor Nunn, I think he did some really good work there. David Ultz I think is a very, very clever designer, and I think Alison Chitty's work, too, has been always very very good and I think her work with storyboards has taught me a lot. |
