Question: Do you think that audiences have a very clear sense of historical period and the resonances of those periods? Answer: I think so. Even if maybe they don't think consciously I think subconsciously our brains are so full of images that we've picked up from the television right from the day we were born, I think our brains are remarkable. You know, they do say we only think with a tiny part, don't they and that there's this huge section that can store up so many images and I think it's really exciting sometimes to have, say, Coriolanus or Julius Caesar that was taken from Roman times, but was then written in Elizabethan times, that is then set in another period, and the resonances between those different periods is very exciting I think. And I think that people do appreciate them, even if they don't know the exact historical events of the French Revolution, for example, or Bosnia, or, you know, whichever period you are happening to set it in. |
