Description Question: Do you have any response to The Globe Theatre project? Answer: Yes I do. I hate it. Question: Why is that? Answer: I would say the conscious part of me or the logical and rational and sensible part of me says there is a place for any theatre, and I do believe that, but personally, I don't like it at all. I think it is heritage theatre, it's museum theatre, I don't enjoy it, I don't like standing there, I think the plays I've seen I haven't liked. I haven't liked the productions of them. I think Mark Rylance is a very talented actor and director, I must say, but I think it's the actual theatre building that I object to. (What are the limitations of it that you object to?) I think it's distracting. It's totally distracting to think that this is how it used to be done in Shakespeare's time. This is the twenty first century, even though I've just said, you know, it can be done anywhere, maybe I should say you can't see it or hear it at The Globe Theatre and that would be it. (What about the relationship that is set up there, did you think that was a positive thing, I mean with the groundlings and they sometimes come into the audience and in a sort of a promenade kind of a way?) I just find the dynamic of it, I mean this is really a subject I can go on for hours, but I won't bore you to death [laughs], I mean the level of the stage kind of cutting off its own level, I find sometimes not being able to see things utterly frustrating, and hear things, I don't like the daylight, I don't like not being taken into an artificial, I think of the theatre as an artificial medium, it's creating a very particular atmosphere and I know I talked about the carpet in the field and daylight, but that's a different situation to me and a very very simple relationship between audience and performers. This is somehow contrived. I'm sitting right forward in my seat here, I really don't like it.
