Question: Do you think that Shakespeare is a positive influence on the British theatre generally, or is it something that is a legacy that you have to address every time you do any piece of theatre? Answer: I don?t, I don?t know really. I think I would, I would have said yes when I was younger, you know, when I was in my twenties or even early thirties, I was, I was scared of Shakespeare as a designer, you know, and I might have thought there was that kind of, there was a sort of hang up about him. And there is, of course, the whole heritage side of things, you know, there is this kind of, you know, thing throughout the world, that we?ve got Shakespeare and, you know, he wrote the greatest things ever and all that stuff. But they?re, you know, they?re just great plays, they?re just absolutely wonderful characters, you know, that the character insight is the great thing. So no, no, I?d just say they are great plays and you do them because they are great plays but it doesn?t, it doesn?t, it shouldn?t be stopping anybody else writing great plays. I mean that?s, there was just this extraordinary guy who wrote this stuff, and, you know, one shouldn?t be afraid of it, I suppose. But [pause], but I think it?s, I think what?s sad is that nobody?s, nobody?s writing new plays much that have that kind of scope, you know. That there is some great new writing, but it?s generally small scale and The Globe is starting to, you know, do new writing. They are doing one this summer. They did one two years ago, you know, maybe it?s to do with theatre spaces too, maybe, you also have to say, well, to get over, you know, writer?s write for spaces, they definitely do, they write for sorts of theatres and if writers, rather than looking at it as this big kind of weight hanging over everybody, ?nobody could write a play like Shakespeare?s?, it?s quite exciting to think of writing for this kind of space that he was writing for and that that might, kind of, you know, open up again areas of writing that have laid dormant because nobody has really been thinking about audience address in that way, or that relationship in that way for years, you know. |
