Designing Shakespeare Collection - Relationship with Director

Description Answer: I see that as my role, to find ways for the piece, not for me, but for the piece which includes the director, the choreographer, the writer, you know, we're all part of doing something together. It doesn't necessarily, I don't necessarily believe in that old adage that the designer is just a sort of cipher and just someone who should be unseen, because I think that's all a bit hokey as well, that's all a bit, you know, it's a bit sort of inverted art, pretentious, pompousness. You just do it, but it is to do with relating to these people and it's you know, the community art job of all of them isn't it, I mean it's the job which involves several egos coming together to create. I've had, mercifully and luckily, you know, a terrific time, really terrific. There's only about three directors out of probably seventy who I wouldn't wish to work with again. So, in the main I find I get on really well with people that, you know, if someone's asked you to do something, because that's the way it goes, I mean designers don't get to pick directors, directors pick designers in the same way as they pick their cast, their actors. They presumably pick you for a particular reason, one they think that you are talented in some way, shape or form, or that you've shown in the past that you're capable, and your job, your responsibility is to the text, to the actors, to the director, to a whole. But I also think you have an obligation to, but without, and this is the difficult bit, but without doing the thing of style, imposing style. I still think you have an obligation to investigate it with them, alongside of them, but bring something original and thought provoking or whatever, to it. I mean you are duty-bound not to just be a job's worth and go, you know [puts on bored, uninspired tone] Õ?well, I think a set of steps would go really well here because that would elevate him amongst the crowd. Yes, should we all vote for steps then?' I mean, you don't do it that way, but there is a kind of osmosis that goes on between a really good bunch of people and something slightly electric comes out, something a little bit more with a rough edge or something that's not too smooth.
