Description Question: Do you develop a sort of language with the director when you work together? Answer: Quite clearly. I mean Trevor's the person I've worked with most over the last twenty-five years, in fact in two years time it will be thirty years, and when Trevor and I first started to work we had these incredibly long conversations. Our conversations could be written on the back of a postage stamp these days, I mean he tends to say Õ?John, we're gonna do this production and I think this and this' and he knows that he can encapsulate something and what he knows is that I will bring exactly that to it, but it will surprise him how it's done. And that's the trick. I mean, the fact that he will get exactly what he wanted, but in a form that he would never, ever have imagined it at that juncture mean Les Miserables is a prime example of thatÕ? how that whole design worked because Trevor just said, you know, Õ?I think I want to have a turn table to do stuff on', yeah, well, you know, turn table, fine, but how do you solve all the other problems in how we are staging a huge, you know, epic piece. Well, a lot of it came from staging Shakespeare, taking huge epic pieces, and using many of the devices that we'd used before but coming at it from just a slightly different, more musical way.
