Twelfth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Shelagh Keegan |

Question: If you and the Director have a different opinion about a scene or the play itself, how do you come to a resolution? Answer: I think in the end the Director wins, they have to, because they have to have, they have to and it would, I mean if the Director is worth their salt they have to. I guess you back off as a designer in the end, if a Director says "no way" you know ?this is not how it's going to happen?, you either re-design or you, I guess you can walk out, but in the end usually you find a compromise and it is with me it was always, well, ok I don't really agree with that but this is your vision, you know, your vision of the world, I remember Richard Attenborough saying to me "the most successful designers were, designs were the ones that created a world that the actors could live in" and I think that's true really and the designers responsible for, well in my case for in Fran's or maybe other people it's also for coming up with that world, I was never that kind of inspirational I don't think, maybe I was I don't know, I don't think I was, and I would create that world quite happily. I think David was, and Graham would know what world they wanted and so in the end it's their vision, isn't it, it's their idea, their little nut, so you really have to go along with that and if you're not happy with that enough times then you know it's probably not the right director for you to be working with, so you make, and I was lucky, you know, I got to work with the same director for a long time, I don't know if it's that easy any more, I mean I haven't been in it for six years so I don't know. |
