Question: What about other designers work who either you admire or who have influenced you, other designers you look to for inspiration? Answer: I remember being very influenced by Bob Crowley, seeing A Winter's Tale at The National and not the National, the RSC, and thinking how, what an awkward thing it must have been for the actors, you know, this big white cloth being put on the stage as a very simple statement, but actually how brilliant it looked. And Alison Chitty was, always right from my early designing days at Stratford when she was head of design at Stoke and I used to across and borrow costumes from her and I was just always impressed by the way that woman worked. She's a complete workaholic and a very wonderful person and I always thought if she can do it I can do it, you know, she was a bit of a guru, I mean I don't think she was terribly aware of my existence other than on the periphery and I'd say hello and we would chat sometimes, but I always was very aware of what she was up to and doing so she was someone who I looked up to. You know, yeah, Bob Crowley, Alison Chitty and Rob Jones I like now, I think he's very good, you should be talking to him and who else, and Jessica, I like Jessica's, and Fran, I've always liked Fran's work. I think she's an immensely strong designer. |
