Short Desc Third video interview clip with Theatre Designer Shelagh Keegan
Description Question: The Young Vic is a very particular space. Does the space that you are designing for have a large impact on what you are doing? Answer: Absolutely totally, I mean I think David and I found our niche in The Young Vic, especially when we just had to turn it into the round in that I've always been someone who seeks truth in their life always and for whatever reason, you know, going right back to childhood, and I think that when you design in the round, you know, you are as close as I am to the actors and you can't tell a lie, that actor can't fake it. I think in design I think it's the same thing, you have to be very minimal but very truthful I think in the design in the round. But obviously in proscenium you can exaggerate things more, you, cost is necessarily more expensive I would imagine. I mean although I think sometimes with theatre in the round you can spend as much on costume actually as well because sometimes the emphasis can be on costume rather than set, so you know, it can be as expensive, it depends on the production, but I'm not sure cost is always a saving, but usually, you know. And thrust theatre, I think is largely unsuccessful because it's neither one nor the other. I know people like it but personally I think it doesn't work unless it's Kabuki and then it's very ritualised.
