Twenty-Seventh video interview clip with Theatre Designer Sally Jacobs |
| Description |

Question: What do you think in terms of a future for theatre design? Where do you think it's going? Answer: I think that, I , I don't know, I really don't know because I've stopped doing it because I became a director. I stopped wanting to collaborate with everybody, I just wanted to do my own thing. So I actually find it hard to think of design now separately from directing. What is happening now is that a lot of people, a lot of artists want to make their own work and there's a whole new wing of of working now of director/designers. And I think that's for me where the future lies. Where these two, whether the, you know, these two elements are fused into the one artist. And certainly a lot of of performance art and fringe theatre is moving that way. And at the Slade where Iå?ve been teaching, we teach specifically to try and turn out all round artist who can produce their own work. And and that's more interesting to me than this wonderful meeting between, you know, the director's concept and the designer's concept and then melding it into something. And, I suppose I'm more interested in the actual performance now than I am in the dÌ©cor. Question: You find for years, I mean, your own work that has been more productive (Yes) as a way of working? Answer: Yes, yes. And less and less, what we call scenery and more and more just finding the right space and the right ambience and just using, you know, just the absolutely essential elements which I suppose is like going back to the sixties again to the sort spare thing, you know, in a more contemporary way. |
