Short Desc Seventeenth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Fran Thompson
Description Question: How do you find approaching the same text in your case with the same director, but at different periods? I mean there was a ten year span I think between the two times that you did Julius Caesar, do you see it as the same text the second time around, do you see different parts of it, how do you feel about it? Answer: Oh, it's definitely going to be different because I'm ten years older for a start and the Berlin Wall falls down, this is where, with The Globe Theatre, I have a problem with the word definitive as well. The idea that somehow there is a definitive production to me is completely ridiculous. I've heard people say "This is the definitive production" and I think this is ludicrous because the world changes and the Berlin Wall comes down and the political landscape changes and the people change and there is never a definitive production. There are productions that are very powerful and resonant in their time, and if they happen to be something that we revisit and see and think that was wonderful it was like watching old films and rediscovering things in them, but they are seen within their context, I don't think they are seen as somehow, I do have a problem with the word classic, even though I have used the word classic text, but I mean that because that is what people use to describe Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama and things like that, but somehow that this is a prototype that is never going to change and can't be equalled, and I think that's ridiculous.
