Short Desc Twenty-Third video interview clip with Theatre Designer Fran Thompson
Description Question: Do you think there is a legacy, positive or negative that Shakespeare sort of imposes on the British theatre that has to be overcome? Answer: Yes. I think that's why people coming from the outside where it isn't so much of a legacy find it much easier and if I can use an example of my own work, when I did Death Of A Salesman at The National with David, I was interviewed later by an American student who said she went in to watch it and said Arthur Miller is very like Shakespeare, he's very, you know, the great classic writer and she said when the Lyttelton fire curtains split in the middle and she saw a tree and a bed floating in the air, she thought she was in the wrong place, but she said it was, this was her words, she said it was a revelation to her because the text had been seen in a completely different light. We didn't design it in a house and I think that's what people do when they come to Shakespeare when they haven't had it drummed into them rather like the Bible or some great classic religious work, they can come at it with a fresh eye and I think that's very healthy.
