Question: Do you think you get associated with a particular type of production and that effects people's expectations of your next production? Answer: Yeah, yes, I think people get labelled as well. Yeah, definitely I think so. We used to be know as the Soviet of The Young Vic when we were at The Young Vic in the eighties, and the productions done there were always known to come from a left wing view point generally, so we were always going to be pro Brutus and Cassius in Julius Caesar and we were always going to be anti Coriolanus. I mean that's I think, how, the critics saw it and that's how it was seen and that's why I think, often the reviews were very polarised. Question: Does that affect what you then get offered in the future? Answer: Yes, definitely. And I think a word feminism comes wafting around your name as well, I think that one gets latched on too. I know the directors have said "well, offer this one to Fran 'cos she's a feminist" . I don't like being categorised like that, but I think it is inevitable if you do come up to texts with your own political perspective or viewpoint. But I think to be seen as somebody who rigidly is going to interpret something in a particular way, that worries me deeply because then I think you do get marginalized and ghettoised and I think that people do see you as only doing one thing, like being typecast for an actor. |
