Question: How did Julius Caesar work in terms of the very different audiences, culturally in particular, with the promenade performance.? Do you have to sort of re-train an audience if it goes completely against their expectations? Answer: It was interesting, we were in rehearsal, and we had, we asked a whole load of sixth-formers in to watch it and it became apparent that they didn't really know what they were doing, they didn't know where to go and they wanted someone to tell them. So what evolved from that, we began to develop rules, I'm sure other people that have done promenade probably had got to this stage before us, you have to discover these things as you go along, and I thought this was a good way of doing it actually and the actors were then planted, some actors were planted in the audience after that and they began to tell the audience you can sit at this point, or, you know, we have to move over here at this point, and it wasn't huge signals of this and this and like sign boarding necessarily, it was really quite understated and yet they were given a clue as to where they were able to go and what they were able to do and that was fine. And the actors met the audience outside of The Other Place as well, which was the only place it was really fully promenade. When it went on tour is was part seating and part promenade, so it was in a sense easier because it was a smaller number of people, but there the actors guided them a little, yes. (And did it get a different response to other productions that you have done?) Yes, the audience were so involved in it, they were so close to them, I mean it was really quite, I think the actors found it quite unsettling to begin with, but once they got used to it I think it was such, I don't want to say a unique experience, but there is no other word for it really, it was a very, very exceptional experience. |
