Third video interview clip with Theatre Designer Jenny Tiramani |

Question: Generally speaking, how do you approach a new design assignment, how do you begin? Answer: Most of my design work is text-based, has been text-based, I have really never worked with a choreographer, for example on a new devised piece of dance, I've always had a text to deal with I think, and I suppose the starting point is just, is rooting the play and talking about it to the people involved. I mean, those aren't always the same people, I have to say, at The Globe, I might well be having a conversation as I will be later this week with Mark and with Greg Riply Duggan, the producer, about doing a play next year that we want to do but we haven't got a director yet. Given that there is a director, that is the person, and the lead actor, that with Shakespeare I would usually start working with and with say, Claire Van Kampen, if it's involving her because she's very much a sort of primary collaborator. But, you know, to some extent you've got to look at the play together first. And I suppose the thing that I'm looking for first is structure, that's just the way that I work, is that I want to understand the structure of the play before I start to, to really even, even try to think about, you know, the story as such, it's how the story is composed on stage. |
