Fifth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Chris Dyer |

Question: What is your response to The Globe Theatre as a space for performance? Answer: Too big (LAUGHS) Question: Too big for anyone or any production? Answer: It's like it's, I mean, to being in there I just sense that it's as if they have made it a size too big. I think that the gallery is too far away from the stage and that the stage is too big for the number of performers that you would normally have on stage in a Shakespeare. I find it quite difficult that in the gallery you've, actually, you observe an audience enjoying the play. The groundlings seem to be in direct contact with the performers and the performers use the groundlings to play off to the gallery. I mean that's just house style at the moment but it is as if you are removed from the play and you are sitting in a gallery and you kind of watch it through someone else if you like. |
