Short Desc Fifth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Jenny Tiramani
Description Question: You've already spoken about the fact that you've worked in a lot of very different environments, how does the function of design and your role within the team, change from one environment to the next? Answer: I'm not sure if the environment that changes that or the makeup of the people. I mean I clearly do sometimes, you know, if I'm working at The Globe then I'm really doing costume design and the staging elements of it are very specific but they're very limited, so my role, yeah, everybody kind of treats you as the costume designer, you know, your role is different in a space that's very much pre-determined, whereas, you know somewhere like the Rorright stones, if you're planning your production in a stone circle, for example, or as I have done, in Corfe Castle, you're actually going to, you know, it's site specific and therefore, you know, you're practically deciding which route people are going to take into the space, you know, where the toilets are going to be, and you know, what the whole experience is going to be, it's a much larger job, it's a much, it's a different sort of responsibility really. But in terms of a kind of a primary role of making theatre I think that depending on the personality of the director, in particular, the role can be very, you know, that changes the role of designer and I mean, by and large I wouldn't choose to work with directors who consider a designer to be a decorator and to do as they're told, that's not very satisfactory really, it's not a very good use of other creative people I don't think. But there your role, you can be sort of pigeon-holed whereas working with other group of people, again that one's worked with for years, and in my case I'd say with Ultz, if he's directing then we work together in a way that you can't, you know, we might both, he might have design ideas and I might have staging ideas, you know, casting ideas, I'm always involved at The Globe with casting because I'm with a group of people that I've been working with for a while and, you know, we all kind of know some of the performers that we're talking about using and it very much is going to be an important, you know, part of the production, particularly in terms of, you know, male and female casting, I mean that determines a production.
