Question: Do you find that The Globe has a particular place in the heritage debate about Shakespeare? Answer: Well of course. And of course, you know. At the beginning everybody said 'oh, it's a theme park'. I don't know what everyone meant by a theme park really, I think Stratford-on-Avon is very much more of a theme park kind of environment, you know, when you go up there you are just surrounded by Shakespeare heritage and that's if you think Shakespeare wrote the play, you know, this man from Stratford anyway, anyway he was just born there it's not where he worked, you know, to me that's always seemed very kind of Disneyish, the whole thing about Stratford and in the future it sounds like it might become more so. Who knows, but of course, yeah, we've built this old building, I mean of course we're gonna get knocked, we have been knocked for that, not recently, and certainly not within the last couple of years. There's been a huge turn around in the press and, you know, I think like most members of the organisation, we're just not bothered by it any more, it's insignificant, it's not really part of our working lives, you know. We work by the river in a beautiful, you know, environment, a clean environment. We get to work outdoors, and lots of people come to see what we've done and genuinely get involved in it. What more could you ask? So the idea that we're a tourist attraction is fine, you know, tourists are fine, you know. We don't, you know, tourists become intensely interested in it all and well, I'm a tourist too when I go abroad, it's fine. |
