Question: What attracted you to theatre and where were your starting points? Answer: My starting point was, I think, as a small child my parents were, had friends that were slightly associated with a local amateur dramatic group in Kent and an opera society, and I went to see their productions of mainly light opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, things like that, but also musicals and I just, I loved the theatre, I loved going to see things. I loved being in plays at primary school, acting, and around nine I started drawing characters, I wouldn?t say there were costume designs, but certainly I discovered that I enjoyed imagining characters in the plays. And The Tempest was the first Shakespeare production that I did drawings of when I was nine. And I think it came from early, early on and by about twelve, between nine and twelve, I wanted to be an actress, I thought I?d love to act and my parents took me to the theatre and sometimes up to the West End of London to see things and I remember seeing the first production of Oliver!, designed by Sean Kenny and that was, you know, absolutely a revelation to me. I mean it was a fairly revelatory piece of design, but that really excited me. And then when I was twelve, my Dad took me to the Victoria and Albert museum, because I loved going to see art and craft in museums and we saw an exhibition of a French designer called Claude Mauret, who was a costume designer, and I was very excited because I realised that it was a proper job, being a theatre designer, and from then on, from twelve, I decided that that was what I wanted to do. |
