Question: Can you bring that to Shakespeare in another space, do you think? Answer: Well, it's very hard, I mean we have toured the Tokyo Globe to, we've just been to BAM in Brooklyn with Cymbeline, and we've tried different Globe components, but you've never got the freedom of being outdoors, you know, that, those amphitheatres have a particular kind of combination of things that makes the audience very free and the best performances, very liberated. So even though we have tried indoors when we have been on tour with shows, we turn the lighting up, you know we keep lighting on the audience, but it's hard to replicate, you can't really replicate all of it, so I don't think, and the audience are all sitting down usually, so you don't quite get the kind of buzz that you get at The Globe. We did at Tokyo take all the seats out the Tokyo Globe in ninety eight, for As You Like It, and although the Japanese audience found that very strange and they all stood at the back [laughs] left this big empty space before the stage, after a while they got used to it and after some encouragement from Touchstone, they started to sort of come forward and they were the most fantastically engaged audience once they got the hang of it, and we did get a similar feel then, I think. But of course, you know, at The Globe you don't get the close up that you get in a studio theatre production of Shakespeare, where you're, you know, it's very intimate, the actors have to play in a way, in a certain way at The Globe, which doesn't mean shouting at all, but it does mean sharing everything very publicly. I still, you know, I would enjoy a good studio production as well. |
