Fifteenth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Jenny Tiramani |

Question: In terms of working with directors who don't know the space at The Globe and don't have your wealth of experience, do they sometimes have difficulty adapting? Do you find yourself guiding people a little bit sometimes? Answer: Yeah, I mean it's, it's possible. There' s a group of us who can be helpful now because, you know, after working there for five years there are certain things that, that, you know, it's helpful to avoid and, and a lot of new directors do do those same things over and over again, like blocking actors at the front of the stage all the time, feeling like they've got to be in front of the pillars to, to, you know, connect to the audience, which is, which is very flat and which excludes a lot of the audience behind. There is a kind of a dead area between the pillars too, which as a designer you have to be very careful not to design, if you put furniture, you know this thing about, you know, often design puts furniture in the place where the actors should be. So if the actors are not actually on the furniture it becomes a block and it's very common actually to see that. But, so you have to be very careful with placing objects on The Globe stage, that the object doesn't push the performers either between the pillars, which is a dead area, or too far on to the front and so there's a lot to do with orientation and dynamics of playing on there that I think it's helpful to be able to share with a director. Otherwise it is the question of the decoration that a lot of directors and designers coming for the first time just cover it all up [laughs] and of course that looks like you've covered something up. I don't think that's particularly graceful. That's not really, that's not design is it? It's a cover up job. And so what I try to do with new directors is to do something which maybe doesn't' really look like I've covered the theatre up but adds another element that sort of calms it down. That's something that commonly comes up, yeah. |
