Question: Back to my other question, do you ever work with other designers or do you work on your own primarily? Answer: ? I have worked as a costume designer to another designer and I've worked as a set designer with a costume designer. I don't like it. Question: Why is that? Answer: I prefer to do the whole piece, I mean I believe that designers should conceive the whole piece in a way if you like. Maybe the ideal situation is to have a good assistant set designer and a good assistant costume designer and that you through them control the whole piece and don't worry about having to go into detail in each area. When I am just designing the set I find I'm quite removed from the centre of what's going on because I am not in touch with the actors and I think that that's, in a way, it's that contact with the actors and with rehearsal, that gets you to the centre of what's going on. I think it's quite easy, the shows that I have done, where there have been separate designers, I've never really been happy with the way that one sits with the other. Okay I quite strongly believe, in fact, that the way to a play is through understanding the characters anyway and through the characters that you understand the situation and story of the play and that one of the ways into design is through the character to the space, rather than from the space to the character. |
