Short Desc Fifth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Ralph Koltai
Description Question: What was the question about the space? Does it have a large impact on your final design in your approach? Answer: Oh it has a fundamental impact. If you do Hamlet on the main stage at Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, that's one thing, if you are asked to do it in the studio at the Other Place, that's another. The space actually dictates your approach to the production and that is quite crucial because you can't just transfer. If you have an idea, the idea is related to the space. I did the original for the first production at the Sydney Opera House of Tanhousier(SP?) and it's an impossible stage set, the building is a wonderful piece of sculpture but on the inside it's full of problems but the one thing it does have is huge steps, so my immediate response to that was I used the steps, you know. It has great problems with the flying system so ignore the flying system as far as possible don't get into it, try and avoid it and what I have just said really applies wherever you go, you know. I mean one can do, you know, Hamlet in a room twice the size of this or any other place for that matter, it would be quite different to doing it at the National Theatre or on a proper stage.
