Short Desc Thirteenth video interview clip with Theatre Designer Ralph Koltai
Description Answer: No the one that I wasn't convinced about was Troilus and Cressida (Interviewer: Oh right ok.) and I was quite wrong because Howard Davis who directed it, if that is the one you are referring to, made my re-design work. I did a design which was, to me, seemed to me important of differenciating between Greece and Troy, the two armies by creating two locations. When I showed my design to Howard he was totally perplexed, immediately, and stunned. When that happens, it has happened very rarely to me, but it can of course happen, you can't argue, you can't make speeches about and say 'you're wrong I'm right', you just got to push the thing aside and say 'Come on let's talk again, what's the problem?' and so that was the case on that production for 1976, somewhere round that. I totally re-designed it and my re-design came to me, as I have said I'm an ideas person and I suddenly thought of Tara in Gone With The Wind when she comes back and finds that old house, so there was an influence there from the film in my set. There was very very little change between the scenes for the Greeks and scenes for the Trojans. Yes there were additions like chandeliers flying and so on but it was quite minimal. I didn't think it was going to work, I couldn't see how you could get through the play by keeping more or less the same locale thoughout, but I was wrong. Howard made it work, it was a good production. There wasn't a single critic who made a comment about the set being inappropriate so obviously it did work but I was sceptical, yes.
